Being attacked by an assailant using a club or stick or an object used similarly, requires a proper response by you if you wish to avoid serious injury or even death. The situations are extremely complex and dangerous and may allow you no mistakes.
The person expertly trained in karate techniques is able to meet such situations with confidence, but not without difficulty. Keeping that in mind, you as an average citizen must develop appropriate responses as shown in this chapter. They have been prepared for your capabilities and to cover the minimum necessary principles to effectively meet common eventualities connected with armed single and multiple assailants.
All responses described in this chapter must be practiced with partners. Begin slowly, so that you have complete knowledge of what you are trying to do. Gradually speed up the attack situations and your responses in meeting them. Seek to build an automatic response by frequent daily practices several times a week.
Practice in normal daily garb and do not limit yourself to smooth, flat surfaces such as a gym floor. Try to practice on grass, gravel, paved and unpaved surfaces: surfaces that will bring you closer to the actual conditions likely to be encountered in a real emergency.
